A multi part documentary / reality series from Germany

on ARD that attempts to show conditions on emigrant  ships headed to America in the 1800s. Although over 5000 people tried out to be on the program, only 14 passengers, 5 children and 18 sailors were chosen to take part in this experiment. The ship As a film the Fridtjof Nansen was rebuilt and altered for the shooting so that no modern equipment was visible. “Passengers” and “crew” dressed, and behaved as they would have in 1855.

This program really is a fascinating look back at the hardships that people endured… seasickness, crowding and homesickness… all to reach their new home in America.  (My parents arrived in a jet plane. After this, I’m sure they will never again complain about lack of legroom!)

1. Aufbruch

Die BREMEN, ein traditioneller Dreimaster, genauer gesagt ein Großtoppsegelschoner, wie es sie heute kaum mehr gibt, ist auf dem Weg nach Bremerhaven. Auf Kapitän Hanns Temme und seine 17köpfige Mannschaft wartet dort seine „Fracht“.

1. Departure 

The BREMEN, a traditional barque, specifically a large topsail schooner, as there is today little more, is en route to Bremerhaven. In his 17-member team captain Hanns Temme and there awaits his “cargo”.

2. Zuflucht

Der vierte Tag der Reise. Die Bremen befindet sich noch in der Nordsee. Es ist kalt, 12 Grad, und es bläst ein starker Wind. Für die Zwischendeckpassagiere beginnt um kurz vor sechs Uhr der Tag mit Wecken durch die Steuerfrau Amélie.

2. Refuge

The fourth day of the trip. The Bremen is located in the North Sea. It’s cold, 12 degrees, and it blows a strong wind. For the steerage passengers, the day begins at just six clock with wake-up by the control Amélie.

3. Streit

Die Bremen ist unterwegs im Atlantik. Der Kurs führt durch die raue und gefürchtete Biscaya. Der Segelalltag der Matrosen ist in diesen Tagen besonders kräfteraubend. Das Schiff muss hohen Wellenbergen trotzen und hartnäckig den Kurs halten, doch die Steuermänner sind Profis der Navigation.

3. Dispute

The Bremen is underway in the Atlantic Ocean. The course takes you through the rough and dreaded Biscay. The sailing everyday sailors is particularly exhausting these days. The ship must withstand and maintain persistent course high wave crests, but the pilots are professionals navigating.

4. Heimweh

Die Bremen passiert die Kanarischen Inseln. Das Backschaftssystem scheint zu funktionieren, inzwischen hat man auch den ersten Fisch gefangen und zubereitet. Er schmeckt köstlich. Allerdings macht den Reisenden ein unerwünschter Passagier zu schaffen: Schon seit längerem hatte die Proviantmeisterin Eva Doerr Bissspuren an einigen Lebensmitteln entdeckt, die eigentlich nur von einer Ratte herrühren können.

4. Homesickness

The Bremen passes the Canary Islands. The back shaft system seems to work, now it has caught and prepared also the first fish. It tastes delicious. However, the traveler makes an unwanted passenger to provide: For quite some time the provisions champion Eva Doerr had discovered bite marks on some foods that can really only come from a rat.

5. Hoffnung

Östlich der Kapverdischen Inseln macht die Bremen weiterhin nur wenig Fahrt. Die schier unerträgliche Hitze beschränkt alle Aktivitäten auf ein Mindestmaß. Abwechslung in den gleichförmigen Alltag bringt lediglich das Fangen von Fischen.

5. Hope

East of the Cape Verde Islands, the Bremen continues to make little ride.The unbearable heat restricted all activities to a minimum. A change in the uniform life brings only the catching fish.

6. Ankunft

Eine Zeitreise ins Jahr 1855: 45 Frauen und Männer folgen den Spuren der Auswanderer, segeln unter harten Bedingungen auf einem Dreimaster von Bremerhaven nach New York. Sie wollten diese „Grenzerfahrung“ – das Leben auf engstem Raum, null Komfort, einfaches Essen und den täglichen Kampf mit Wind und Wellen, Heimweh inklusive.

6 Arrival

A journey through time to the year 1855: 45 men and women follow in the footsteps of the emigrants to sail under severe conditions on a three-masted from Bremerhaven to New York. They wanted these “border experience” – life in a confined space, zero comfort, simple food and the daily struggle with the wind and waves, homesickness included.
